MONCTON 1949 City Directory

Some brief facts about the City of Moncton as stated in the 1949 City Directory
When Moncton was incorported as a City on the 23 of April 1890,it was not the clean beautiful center that exists today. During the first few years it existed as a city,it was mostly a residential section for the employees of the ICR (later known as CNR) situated from Hall's Creek on the east, to Bostford Street on the west with Main Street as it's chief business center. Moncton has grown steadily and with its growth and development many improvements have been made and public utilities supplied. Today the City Planning Commission is constantly working to beautify the City. They have purchased and are presently installing one of the most up to date and modern incinerators obtainable on this continent for garbage disposal. New Moncton's splendid streets and beautiful residences are greatly enhanced by the large number of shade trees, handsome and well kept parks and lawns which adds considerably to the appearance of this progressive City.
In the realm of education Moncton is well to the front with its fine schools. The Moncton High School erected in 1934 and elarged in 1948 is one of the finest School Buildings in Canada. As a Railway and Air Line Center, Moncton's fame has travelled far beyond the confines of the Maritimes. After World War 11 the City of Moncton, with its usual forsight for progress and expansion and with the cooperation of the Dominion Government and the CNR established the Victory Industrial Center on the location previously occupied by the R.A.F and formerly known as the NO 10 Release Center. Moncton has always been a center of tourist attraction. The famous "Bore" of the Petitcodiac River, which is the nature of a tidal wave, formed by the outgoing and incoming tides at the mouth of the Petitcodiac River has made Moncton justly famous. This phenomenon which is the only one of its kind on the continent, rushes up the river twice daily as a roaring wall of water, rising from 2 to 5 feet in height is seen here. Visitors have come many miles to observe this natural phenomenon and also to enjoy the thrill and sensation at Magnetic Hill where cars appear to coast uphill. Moncton is also the gateway to scenic Albert County the location of Canada's newest Natural Park.

As I said the above information was in the 1949 City Directory ,I would like to add than lots have happened to the Petitcodiac River since then, a causeway was built and it stopped the water from flowing freely, in 2010 this will be changing , they are reopening the water flow for good. It make take years for the river to be back to normal, and many of us will not see that day, but our descendants will . Long ago, ships used to come in with the tides and deliver molasses, and other products it would be great to see these things happen again.

The following are the names of the streets in Moncton New Brunswick Canada and the names of the people living at each address.I do hope this will help you find your ancestors and give you an idea where they were living in 1949.
