CANADIAN MINING AND MINERS
I have decided to create a page on Acadian and French Canadian miners.I shall begin with the men who worked in the coal mines of Nova Scotia. I am adding the men who worked in the mines from Joggins Mines Nova Scotia ‘s 1911 census. I will add their names and their wives and year they were born. Next I am adding the miners who died in Nova Scotia. And finally I am adding a bit about the Klondike Gold Rush in Dawson City. I hope you benefit from what I am posting. The French Canadians were from the Klondike Gold Rush.

THE KLONDIKE GOLD RUSH
Source for the following with permission from www.yukongenealogy.com , for more information I would suggest you go check out their site, there is much more to see.
On August 16 1896 rich gold deposits were discovered in Rabbit Creek later known as Bonanza Creek in Yukon. News spread fast from one camp to another in the Yukon Valley. In July of 1897 the first successful prospectors arrived in San Francisco with their gold, and thus started the Klondike Stampede. Around 1000000 eager prospectors left for Yukon and only around 30000 arrived.Immigrants arriving in Canada had to have one year supply of goods including their food.
Most prospectors arrived at Skagway Alaska and Dyen Alaska. From there they traveled the Chilkoot trail or the White Pass trail towards Lake Bennett. Many prospectors built rafts and boats or anything that floated to make it up the river to Dawson City. Many perished on the raging rivers. For the ones who could not afford to take a boat ,they had to travel anyway they could, some walked, some had dog sleds, and some walked with their pack animals. The White Pass Trail was steep and many animals died along the trail, the trail was also known as Dead Horse Trail. The Chilkoot Trail was just as difficult to travel. Many died of starvation or food poisoning or from mere exhaustion on the trail.Cold weather was also another factor against them, the weather in the Northern British Columbie and Yukon got pretty cold at times. The North West Mounted Police kept as many records as they could for example they kept records of the prospectors entering Chilkoot by boat.
So there were probably many prospectors who were not accounted for.
