Quinan is situated near the Tusket River in Yarmouth County Nova Scotia.
There are many lakes there,the Migmaws or Micmacs were there before the Acadians and they had special names for the lakes.Lake Bennett once Lac Saint Jean was called Oaspag meaning brilliant,Lake Gavel once Lake Covens was called Gigsespag ,Tusket Lake was called Maogtogiag Lake meanings let's go together.

The first Acadians to settle in Quinan were the Mius,the Frontain(Frotten/Fraughton)the O'Bird,the Dulain,the Jacquard,the Blanchard,Morris,Vacon,Collin,Melanson,Castin Doucet.
Note the O'Bird,Dulain,Jacquard,Vacon,Blanchard,Collin and Castin were not of Acadian Origin, but some married with the Acadiens.

The following are some of the families and their ancestors who settled in Quinan Nova Scotia, I have traced some of them back a few generations.

BLANCHARD FAMILY

Jean Marie Blanchard is another Blanchard who came to Acadie,he came from Bayonne France arriving from St.Dominigue as a sailor.
He had to declare that he was not married in Tusket in 1806 in order to get married .
Although he was french he was also colored.
Arriving in Nova Scotia around 1894 he settled in the woods of Pubnico.
He married Claire Mius daughter of Charles Amand and Marie Josette Mius.
They had eight children. According to Clarence Joseph D'Entremont, the name Blanchard was just a borrowed name,that is why we often find the name Marie as a first name or surname,some quickly changed Marie to Merie to Murry to Murray.

Jean Baptiste Casimir Blanchard known as Johnny Murry son of Jean Marie Blanchard was born March 3 1807, the eldest of the family,he settled in Abbotts Harbour.
He married Cecile Bertrand dit Maphre daughter of Etienne and Anastasie Clermont.
Etienne Maphre was a fugitive soldier who settled in Pubnico Ouest not far from the Blanchards.
Jean Baptiste Casimir married a second time to Francoise Mius widow of Gabriel Frontain and daughter of Paul Mius and Marie LeBlanc Feb.7 1860 in Sainte Anne du Ruisseau, they settled at the Fourches.

DOUCET FAMILY

The ancestors of the Doucets from Yarmouth County Nova Scotia was Joseph Doucet born March 12 1706 in Port Royal.
He was the son of Claude and Marie Comeau,he married Anne Surette daughter of Pierre and Jeanne Pellerin Dec.8 1730 in Port Royal.
They were exiled to Massachussetts,where we find them part of 1757,mostly in Gloucester County Mass where in 1760 they had six children.
In 1766 Joseph asked to return to Canada.Later Joseph and his family returned to settle in southwest Nova Scotia ,some settled Baie Sainte Marie,some others in Yarmouth County.
In Yarmouth Joseph settled at Hubbards Point,Charles at Butte Amirault,Jean Magloire settled in Lower Tusket while Michel settled in Ben Point before moving to the Forks(Fourche).

Michel Doucet is the ancestor of the Doucets of Quinan.
He was born in Port Royal Oct 17 1754 and married Marie Suzanne Mius possibly shortly after his return from exile,daughter of Francois and Jeanne Duon. Michel died April 19 1830 age of 75 his wife died after him.
Four of his sons settled at the Forks, Michel,David,Jacques and Joseph Mathrin.

JACQUES DOUCET

Jacques DOUCET born around 1890 at Ben's Point,he married twice , first to Anne LeBlanc daughter of Charles LeBlanc and Marie Susanne Mius April 28 1812, they had 17 children.
Then he married a second time to Anne Theotiste Mius daughter of Nicolas Mius July 27 1842.When Jacques Doucet died his widow Theotiste married Maximin Mius widow of Anne Hiltrude LeBlanc.

FRONTAIN FAMILY

According to Clarence J.D'Entremont the family of Frontain,also named Frotten or Fraughton seems to have come and settled at the Fourches after the expulsion of the acadians.The first one was Julien Frontain also known as Alexander Frontain, meaning that perhaps his name was either Juilien Alexandre or Alexandre Julien.We first find him in Massachussetts,among the exiled acadians under the name of Julien Fortin in 1762 and 1763 where he had with him his wife Anne Mius two sons and one daughter.In 1766 his name is listed as Gullien Fronten.
Anne Mius was the daughter of Francois and Jeanne Duon, Julien and Anne married around 1759-1760 while in Exile.Anne died at Fourches March 23 1807 ,Julien died before her.
They had six children:

1.Olivier Frontain dit Miquinne born around 1757 married Marie Mius (unsure of parents she could be a metis or native american).Olivier and his family settled in Meteghan and Salmon River.He died Dec 6 1839,these are the ancestors of the Frontains of Baie Sainte Marie.

Pierre Laverdure was a french protestant who married in exile in England to an english girl named Priscilla. Brought to Acadie with his family in the spring of 1657 by Thomas Temple,they settled in Boston after the treaty of Breda in 1667.Two of their sons married acadian girls and remained in Acadie.Charles the eldest born around 1643 married Marie Dugas daughter of Abraham Dugas and Marguerite Doucet. Charles Melanson and Marie Dugas had nine daughters and five sons.Two of their sons Charles and Jean Melanson were the ancestors of the Melansons of southwest New Brunswick.
