EVANGELINE NEWSPAPER OBITS

First of all I would like to tell you about the founder of the Evangeline French Newspaper. VALENTIN LANDRY was born in Pokemouche New Brunswick in 1844. He was the great grandson of Aliexis Landry, one of the pioneers of Caraquet New Brunswick. When he was around twelve years old, his family moved to Shediac. He enrolled in Westmorland School in Moncton, where he received his Commercial Course at the age of seventeen.
He went to the USA for a brief stay only to return home in 1865 to enroll at the Saint Joseph College in Memramcook New Brunswick in order to perfect his French language. One year later he taught school in Weymouth Nova Scotia, then went to Truro to further his education earning his first Class Deploma. He went into teaching before accepting a School Inspector Post for the counties of Gloucester ,Kent and Westmorlan in New Brunswick. In 1887 Valentin founded the French Newspaper L’EVANGELINE in Digby Nova Scotia. The first edition was published November 23 1887. It was a weekly newspaper, and he gave it the slogan “Religion,Language and Native Land”. Two years later, Valentin Landry moved his newspaper to Weymouth Nova Scotia in order to reach more clients many of whom were in the Baie Sainte Marie area. He also founded an English newspaper named to Weymouth Press, the English newspaper would appear until 1904 around one year before moving the Evangeline Newspaper to Moncton New Brunswick. The doors of the Evangeline Newspaper was closed on September 27 1982. Retiring from a very active life, Valentin Landry lived a quiet life in Moncton New Brunswick, where he passed away May 17 1919. Today there is a monument in his honor in Pokemouche New Brunswick.
I would like to thank Martin J Legere for permission to add this information about Mister Landry.

Everone has a goal in life and mine came when I began doing my genealogy, my son had a school project on genealogy and one day he came home and said to me “Mom if you are interested ,you can go to the genealogy center at the University to do your family tree, it is free.” So I decided to go and find my roots. Well I searched and dug, and looked in books, and looked in files, and on microfilms, one day I would go and find nothing, the next day I would go and hurray I found something. I never gave up which leads me to why I decided to write all these obituaries. While I was looking for my elusive ancestors, I began searching in the L’EVANGELINE French Newspaper, and found so many things relating to my ancestors, and lots of obituaries. There is sometimes so much information in an obituary, where they lived , where their children moved, their parents ,their ages, sometimes even little stories about them.
I know many people are looking for obituaries of their ancestors or love ones, many of these persons are living far away, and cannot do a search for them. So I decided to try and help, by transcribing the obituaries from the Evangeline Newspaper. It has been a long and tedious project. It took me a long while to do five years of obituaries.I am hoping that these obituaries will be helpful to anyone looking for their ancestors. I have transcribed these obituaries to the best of my ability. Many obituaries were unreadable, many were blurred, but I have entered all the information that I could read. I may be adding more obituaries at a later time, as soon as I can transcribe them.

Here are a few places mentioned in the obituaries; Bathurst NB,Bouctouche,Lorne NB,Savoie NB,St Paul, St Charles,Sainte Marie,Mont Carmel PEI, Urbainville PEI,Rustico,Restigouche PQ,Madawaska,Haute Aboujagane,Memramcook,Barachois,Caraquet,Tracadie,Neguac,Six Road,Belliveau Village,Shediac,Atholville,Rogersville,Eel River Crossing,St Isidore,Inkerman,Adamsville,Rogersville,Atholville,Collette,Petit Rocher,Campbelton,St Ignace,Amherst,Clare NS,Meteghan NS,Digby NS,Salmon River NS,Grosse Coque NS,Yarmouth NS,Saint Antoine NB,Sherbrook PQ,Somerville MA,Hopedale MA,Bristol Conn, Gardner MA, Waltham ,Fitchburg,Leominster,Rumford ME,Cap de Maria PQ,Augusta ME,Concession NS,Lowell MA,Collingville PQ,Athol MA,Abram Village PEI,Edmonton Alberta,Fall River MA,Shippagan, St Simon, Miscou NB, Moncton,St Edouard, Vancouver,West Pubnico and more
