Importance of DNA

Are you wondering what DNA is all about? Well first of all DNA stands for DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID. It is a molucule inside the cells of your body and carries your genetic code.

Mitochondrial DNA testing is used in genealogical research. This test looks for profiles from another kind of DNA.Mitochondrial DNA profiles are dfferent in that they are shared by people with the same mother and are passed down maternally.
Y-Chromosone STR testing allows the scientist to target only DNA left by Male contributors.

At first I did not understand how important it was to have DNA testing for genealogy purposes. But since many villages were burned and records burned along also, this is one way to find out where and what ethnic group our ancestors were from. A good way to do this is by having DNA tested from different persons who ascend to the first ancestors .

For instance I have traced my maternal line to Perrine Bourg. If you had traced your line to Perrine Bourg also, it would be great for the both of us to have our mtDNA done to see the results.Mine would be my maternal line.

Now the Family Tree DNA is a good place to go to register for testing.National Geographics is conducting a five year genographic program along with IBM .I have a friend who had his DNA done,as well as two other who believe they descend to the same ancestor Daniel LeBlanc .The first did not receive the same results as the others. It was through DNA that he came to find out that there was an adoption somewhere in his paternal line. The others had the same test results showing they did descend from Daniel LeBlanc. On another note, many have been asking if they have Native American blood ,as there were Native Americans women who married European men. The results from mtDNA would tell you whether your maternal line descends from a European (such as from France or Native.

For years and years many researchers believed because there was no information on the first Acadian women that automatically they were Native American, yes there were some but not all, so this is why having your mtDNA done is important, it gives us more information than we had and if you go to Lucie's site you will see the results of many who have already been tested.
Just a small footnote, At the moment it is very important to have mtDNA done on the decendents of the first Acadian Women Pioneers.
